“Instead of being upset when someone makes a point we don’t like today, try to really listen to them. Don’t think about all the ways they are wrong, take a moment to think about where they think you are wrong. Assume good faith on behalf of the person on the other side of the issue in question and engage. And if they are not arguing in good faith? Even better – use that as an opportunity to be patient with them. See if you can hold your temper and just let them do what they do, without it ruining your day.” – Ryan Holiday
I read the above paragraph and this morning and realised that this is exactly where I am trying to get to from where I am right now.
I have built a knowledge base around what I believe to be right and now I regularly find myself arguing incessantly the basis of this way.
That’s just my ego needing a prop up. It shouldn’t even matter but I still let it in the door when it knocks.
We all do from time to time. The bastard knocks loudly and shows up in disguise.
My job is to be aware enough that I can see through it and slam the door closed in time.
My job is to live to my values and concern myself with my own action.
More self-reflection, better conversations, and a life lived by example is the best I can do.
