Too many excuses for mediocrity

Everywhere I look, there are more and more excuses for why it’s okay to live a mediocre life.

The world is full of them.

Why?

When did it become okay?

There are excuses for me, for you, for parents, for leaders, for politicians, for teachers, for the youth, for the system and business practices, you name it, there’s an excuse.

There’s a reason why it’s okay to be average and why we can’t do anything about it.

I’m not saying that people can’t skate through life and give as much or as a little effort as they want, that’s completely up to the individual.

What I am saying is that if the choice is made – yes, it’s a choice most of the time – to step into a role that requires some presence of responsibility then we must be accountable for that responsibility.

That if we become a parents, then we should no longer have the option of just skating through and “figuring it out as we go”. That’s not good enough. Why have children if we have no interest in doing as good a job as possible of raising them?

That if we choose leadership in our careers, then we should no longer have the option of giving less than our best effort to the people that count on us. That’s not good enough. Why choose leadership if we aren’t interested in trying our hardest?

These are just the first two examples that popped into my head but it goes for everything.

Everywhere I turn there are excuses punching me, and everyone else, in the face.

There are enough people out there willing to hand out excuses so people feel good.

Justifying the reasons why it’s okay to be mediocre.

Don’t listen to them, don’t buy into it. That’s their choice.

Our effort is a choice and that choice is our responsibility to be accountable to.

We are guilty of all the good we don’t do.
