“Why join the Navy when you can be a pirate?”
This quote by Steve Jobs really captivates me.
Steve coined this quote in the very early days of Apple, in a way to inspire his team to continue to push the envelope and not bow to the big tech companies. A way to stay rebel. To do things different and buck the trend.
I can relate. There’s no hiding I’m a little bit rebel. I don’t like to ride the wave with everyone else, especially if I think that wave is washing over rocks. I like to challenge and push back, sometimes to my detriment, but it’s who I am.
And to that point, I don’t want to just copy Steve’s idea when I invoke that spirit. So for me, I’m going to look to my own history and my own spirit. I’m going to be a little bit cowboy.
A cowboy doesn’t give in.
A cowboy has a truck load of indominable try in the most adverse of situations.
There’s grit and guts and a loyalty to what’s right.
There’s a willingness and attitude to get the job done no matter the obstacle.
A little bit reckless and lawless at times but a cowboy fights when they need to fight.
There’s a history for me that continues to this day.
So Steve, I politely rebel against your quote for my own interpretation. You be a Pirate sir, while I be a Cowboy.
