The most important seat at the table

“It feels to me like we are a planet of humans pretending to be robots.”

It seems as I get older, it becomes more and more prominent how big of a seat at the table money holds.

I’m an adult. I have a mortgage and children to support and bills to pay, so I understand the importance of money as much as anyone, and I am extremely grateful for my opportunities in life. What I don’t understand is when money became the sole head of the table.

Maybe it’s been like that forever and it took me this long to notice, I’m not sure, but I do know that I am a huge believer that the head of the table should be character. This isn’t saying that there won’t be times where money has to hold the head for a period of time, we all struggle and we all need to do things to survive, I’m just referring to strangle hold it seems to have in this world.

When companies, governments, and societies make decisions with only money in mind, they forget about people. People. The single common denominator for everything in our current time. Every business is a people business, the stuff we do at each of them just varies.

When we only look at quantifiable payback and the bottom line, we let people down.

I know the rebuttal will be “But Dice, we need money to keep households, companies, governments and societies going and the world spinning” and you would be 100% correct, but if we continue bowing to system, if we continue to let it completely rule every decision, then the cycle never ends. We have to break it. And there are a lot of places that are trying.

We need to make decisions for the betterment of people. Our people. The world’s people.

I haven’t researched it but I think we’d be hard pressed not to find a serious issue in the world that isn’t rooted in greed and money.

All I’m suggesting, and it’s no small feat, is to move the money seat to the side of the table. It’s still important but to change the world, we need other seats to be more important. Seats like character, integrity, and just doing what’s right. Move them to the head and encourage the people and businesses around you to do the same where possible. It might seem like too big of a task but we simply have to try. We are witnessing a world that holds money and power as the ace and it’s not tracking so well. We either change or we burn and start again.

We can’t just look at the bottom line anymore.

The time is now for integrity, character, and values to run the world.
