We know what we need to do

“That’s about as real as it gets.”

I was listening to a podcast with Rich Froning (4 x CrossFit Games Individual Champion) on it this morning and among a heap of stand out takeaways, there was this one little throw away line that stuck with me more than the rest.

He was discussing his programming and how he has pretty much always programmed for himself – “I program for myself because I don’t want to be able to blame somebody else. I know what I need to do. It’s accountability on myself.”

It wasn’t a big moment in the conversation and he didn’t stay on the thought very long but I just remember thinking “SHIT….that’s about as real as it gets. We do know what we have to do. Nearly everyone in the world does. I see it all the time. People know but the accountability isn’t there.”

Now I’m definitely not saying you should do your own CrossFit programming unless you are very highly skilled in that area. What I’m saying is that sentence is extremely relatable to the rest of our lives.

We DO know what we need to do most of the time, especially when it’s something that we are unhappy about and want to improve. We know if we should give up a bad habit or start a healthy one. We know when we need to improve in certain areas. We know what the next step in our goals are.

Something I see all around, and in myself more often than I’d like, is the comfort in finding a reason as to why we aren’t accountable for these changes. It is so much easier if the reason we are stagnant is not us. If it’s something or someone else.

Unfortunately Fortunately, that’s nearly never true as it’s nearly always on us.

Lets take a leaf out of Rich’s book and accept some more accountability for our outcomes.
