Raise your black flag

“I will raise my black flag”

There are a lot of ways to interpret the symbol and meaning of a black flag in today’s society.

Over history it has had multiple meanings behind it including:

  • Rebelling against authority and the normal
  • Being a pirate and living by your own set of rules
  • That you would neither give, nor accept quarter, symbolising the opposite of the white flag of surrender
  • A symbol of anarchism

I am neither debating nor putting stock in any of these individual meanings of the black flag but rather offer my own interpretation of it.

I started thinking about using it in my posts over the recent and continued lock down period of the world, but not as a way to rebel against the rules that were being asked of us. No, for me it was always about myself.

When this all started, I saw a lot of reasons popping up as to why I maybe shouldn’t continue to pursue my potential. So many ‘outs’ to doing the hard work that I knew I needed to do. I mean, the world was in temporary chaos so I could spare a few weeks to just kick back and see what happened, couldn’t I?

Nah.

Not that there is a problem with slowing down sometimes, it’s actually rather recommended in our extremely busy world. But that’s not what this was about. This wasn’t about not slowing down, it was about not quitting. It was about creating and growing.

I told myself that I would raise my black flag against the enemies in my own mind. That I would nether give, nor accept quarter in my pursuit. That I would rebel against the rising tide of excuses.

I will not accept the normal life that is so easy to slip in to.

I will not settle for good enough.

I’m the captain of this mighty ship in my mind and the battle rages on.

Hoist the black flag.

I’m here to fight.

Pursue your potential
