Pay the Price

“It’s all achievable, we just have to be willing to pay the price.”

I wrote “Pay the Price” on the blackboard in our gym a few years ago to serve as a reminder of the price of success, a re-calibration of sorts.

I stumbled upon a poem today that rekindled my thoughts of this motto so I thought I’d think on it a little tonight.

Greatness, success, or even just moving forward in absolutely anything comes at a price and that price is usually hard and uncomfortable. It’s giving up the things you want now for the things you want most. It’s being willing to suffer for the bigger picture. The price to pay is adversity. There’s no other way. The alternative is averageness.

Once you choose this path; the obstacles always come, the hard times always come, the uncomfortable always comes. That’s just the price we have to pay for admission to the game of greatness. Let’s play.

“There’s always a way to rise, my friend,
always a way to advance;
Yet the road that leads to Mount Success

does not pass by the way of chance,
but goes through stations of work and strive,

through the valley of Persevere;
And the one that succeeds while others fail,

must be willing to pay most dear.
For there’s always a way to fall my friend,
always a way to slide,
And the ones you find at the foot of the hill,
all sought for an easy ride.
So on and up though the road be rough

and the storms come thick and fast;
There is room at the top for the one who tries,
and victory comes at last.”
