E (Event) + R (Response) = O (Outcome)
This is a simple equation that can help develop what we like to call “The Lion Mind”
Simple is a deceiving word because simple doesn’t mean easy, just simple. The good thing about the above is that once we realise that no matter what, we control our response, we realise that at all times we control at least half the equation. That’s powerful because now we know that we always have a significant impact on the outcome.
Learning this takes purposeful reflection of our interactions for how we responded in certain situations. For me, My journal is my teacher. With it I can record my thoughts on interactions and then look at them from another perspective once they are on paper. I don’t know if this works for everyone but once it’s out of my head and in front of me, it’s a whole lot easier to work through.
Once we start to develop this awareness for our responses, the responses start to get better. They start to get clearer and more aligned with who we want to be. Personally, I’ve always had a reactive persona and I probably hid behind the passionate badge for too long. Not that there’s anything wrong with passion, unless we use it as an excuse. At the end of the day I’m in charge of how I respond so it’s up to me to improve that skill and change that story. I will respond calmer and clearer under pressure.
Action-
So this week, keep track of some of your interactions and make some notes on the ones that you responded to poorly, whatever poorly means for your goals. At the end of the week, review the interactions and how you may have responded stronger, calmer, or with more poise and tact. You will probably start to notice a trend and this will help to become proactive in these situations.
Today is National Superhero Day and a friend of mine has a little saying that fits perfectly here:
