Facilitate the Imagination

It still blows my mind as a parent how much the little things that I take for granted, can bring so much excitement to the minds of our children.

The Easter long weekend in Australia is regularly one of travel and mini-holidays for a lot of families but this year that will not be the case. Normally for us it would mean a beach trip of some sort.

Now it would be easy to get caught up in all of the things we are missing out on this year but I would urge each of us to remember all of the things we are still getting.

For my daughter, Piper, camping isn’t about the destination or the pretty views, it’s about spending time with us camping in a tent, with a campfire roasting marshmallows. It’s about setting up the “campsite” and picking our bedding. It’s about the wonder and excitement of the process and certainly not of the destination. It’s just about family.

So we have spent the day setting up our campsite, having a little fire pit and roasting marshmallows, getting in a quick camp worthy dinner and now, as I am writing this, she is hurrying me along so we can look at the stars and the snuggle up for a camp out movie.

If you have children this Easter, see if you can facilitate the kind of imagination they would have had if you were away at this time. I have a sneaking suspicion that you can. And if you don’t have kids, maybe you need to rekindle that imagination yourself. It’s so easy to lose it as we become adults and life pushes us into the hustle and bustle.

There is something magic where you are right now, it just takes the choice to see it.

Facilitate the imagination.
