“You are richer than 93% of people.
Not in money, but in time. 108 billion people have lived throughout history. 93% of them are dead.
You have what every king and queen, every pharaoh and ruler, every CEO and celebrity of the past would give all their wealth for:
Today.”
This was a thought from James Clear in one of his recent weekly emails and it really stuck with me, so much so that I’ve regurgitated numerous times since reading it.
93%…..
93% would give anything for the chance we get every time we wake up, not discounting that there is a huge percentage of the current population that would crave the lives of myself and anyone with the ability to read this blog.
In a weird way, growing old enough in Australia to develop a chronic condition is a gift as it’s an opportunity not afforded to everyone alive today. It’s not about being happy that it has happened but understanding that gratitude can accompany our moments.
Even on our bad days, there would be a line a million deep of people that would trade us in an instant.
Gratitude is such an important practice, and that’s exactly what it is, a practice.
One of the best ways I’ve found to become more aware of this is to journal. I know, journaling is hard but all things worth doing are. Just the simple act of writing down something you are grateful for in your life every day will have massive positives.
That goes for working through our bad days also. I find that when I can get my bad times down on paper, that I can think through them exponentially more clearly than if I leave it in my head. I quite regularly find that I’ve worked through them before. If they stay in my head it’s so easy for the mind to perpetuate a false and negative narrative on the situation. Our minds are very powerful. Writing let’s me take a bit of that power back. It gives me a way to control something in the moment.
Our bad days are a gift from some perspectives and gratitude is the key to realising it.
