New Skills

Strange times call for new and different skills.

My hair has been getting out of control for a little while and I actually just don’t like going to hairdressers very often. My usual plan is just to wait until I see my sister and she cuts it for me.

Wanting to continue to prioritise social distancing, I decided that going into the shops or to my sisters for a haircut wasn’t something I was comfortable with risking. So my plan was to just grab the clippers and give it a shave to get it over with and not have to worry about it for an extended period. Of course my hair dresser sister wouldn’t allow such a travesty (I still don’t get what they have against a quick clip) so she insisted on face timing and talking us through it.

I was still hesitant even as we began. Amy has never cut hair before and I didn’t want to waste all of our time if the end result was just a buzz cut. Fast forward 1 hour and 6 mins and we have a respectable haircut. I’m not going to say I doubted your skills Amy but I wasn’t super confident.

I went from being hesitant and a bit agitated that we were wasting time to an extremely enjoyable hour of laughs and connection with some of my family, with a bonus of being happy with my hair. Shout out to Emily for dealing with my constant questions and Amy for being the superstar we all know she is!

I didn’t plan on just talking about my hair in today’s entry but I thought it was a cool indicator of some of the scenarios that we will face more often as the weeks go by. None of us are really prepared for what this situation is asking for so the best thing we can do is be open to the new. Don’t close off because you can’t do something the way you have always done it. We have an opportunity here to expand our skills and our lateral thinking ability.

“There can be no life without change, and to be afraid of what is different or unfamiliar is to be afraid of life.” ― Theodore Roosevelt

Be ready and open for the changes and you will be surprised with what you can accomplish.
