Nutritional Leadership

I’ve noticed recently how much of our nutrition habits are our children’s nutrition habits.

As my eating habits have become a little lazy lately, there has been a direct rise in certain food types that Piper regularly asks for….. hello chocolate, ice cream and ‘tella. Not that sugary, carb heavy foods are “bad” but with the regularity I’ve consumed them over the last few months, they don’t fit into my healthy living plan for myself or Piper.

I told myself that after my last Strongman comp that I would aim to put on some more size for my second comp and my mind instantly turned that into “I’ll just eat pretty much whatever I want, when I want” with very little resistance – Whoops!

It’s not about being perfect, as that’s close to impossible, but it’s about making an effort for purposeful food choices when we are parents or leaders.

The things we show our kids now form the foundation of their knowledge base.

What do I want her to have as her foundation?

Limit processed foods. Eat natural, whole foods most of the time. Don’t be weird when out and someone offers you cake. Don’t binge and keep the treats to odd occasion or around physical activity. If you do occasionally binge, enjoy the shit out of it, don’t hate yourself for doing it, and start again tomorrow. Drink lots of water and enjoy a good Stone & Wood every now and then (Just not for a while please!)

How does she learn this?

Not by me telling her and doing the opposite, that’s for sure.

Like any leadership, it comes by example.

Actionable Takeaway

Quick question when grocery shopping or eating out: Do these foods fit the message I want to portray?

I haven’t asked myself this enough lately, or more likely I’ve ignored it for my own short term pleasure, and I need to be better!
