From the Den 22-05 “Surround yourself with like minded people”

Dice’s Corner –

Nearly another month down and what a cracker the past few weeks have been for The Pride. The great Rich Froning once said in an interview that he would take great training partners over a great coach any day, now I don’t 100% believe in this for myself because if I had the oppurtunity of working under a great coach I would take it in a heartbeat, but something I have struggled to find over the last 2 years of my fitness journey is having a consistent training partner.

That has definitely changed this past few months with my brother, Jacob, moving to town and deciding to have a real crack at some competitive fitness with me, a new mate, Josh, who trains like a beast and is pushing me harder than I have gone myself in the last 12 months and I can’t forget my long time fitness buddy, Jeff, who is finally coming around to the fact that he is probably a CrossFitter!!! Stop hating mate, Rip will give you a pass haha. Then there’s KT, who I don’t get to train with as often as I’d like but at least we can do non stop CrossFit season chats all day long! Now I’m not hanging Amy out to dry by any means but obviously our training goals are very different these days so it’s extremely hard to push each other in a competitive way but rather more of a supportive way currently. Although we have just signed up for a mixed pairs beginners comp in Toowoomba in a month which is going to be super fun and I can’t wait to compete with her!

I can honestly say that I have made more progress in the last 2 months than I had in the previous 12, especially with my weaknesses. Having people around you that are good in areas that youre weak is such a great motivator, and I feel like I have way less days that I need to drag myself to the shed to grind away by myself anymore. I am back to genuinely enjoying the process again and I can’t thank the people around me enough.

My main takeaway today is that if you feel stuck in a rut for something that you’re passionate about, doesn’t have to be fitness related, that my best advice is just to surround yourself with like minded people, people who will help drive you to be better and who challenge you in new ways. Go out and join a group in your interest or sound people out on social media, it is a crazy knowledgeable world we live in so there’s really no excuse for not being able to find someone to connect with that can help you.

Surround yourself with great people and nothing can stop you from crushing your goals Pride!!!

Quote of the Week –

Socrates once said, “No citizen has a right to be an amateur in the matter of physical training…what a disgrace it is for a person to grow old without ever seeing the beauty and strength of which their body is capable.”

Book/ Audio Book/ Podcast –

Completely un training or philosphy related this week everyone but I thoroughly enjoyed The Dark Tower I: The Gunslinger by Stephen King.

It is another one of those books that I have wanted to read for a long time but with all the training books I never seemed to make the time for it. With it now being made a major motion picture, I felt that I owed it to myself read it.

I can’t wait to sink my teeth into the rest of the series.

Honestly the change in book genre was rather refreshing so I may try and change it up every few weeks.

P.A.W (Pride Active Workout)–

Regional Team Workout 5 (Our scaled version)

For Time teams of 3

125 Pull Ups (One partner works, one dead hangs, one rests)

100 Toes to Bar (Same as above)

100 Overhead Dumbell Squats @20kgs

This is a pretty high volume workout so scale as needed by cutting the reps or weight to your ability.

Coming up –

Coming up over the next 2 months we have our very first live functional fitness comps! Amy and myself will be competing in a mixed pairs comp in Toowoomba on the 17th June and my brother and I will have a run at the Hell’s Playground same sex pairs comp at CrossFit SPEED which is going to be a real experience for all of us!

You can find details for both of those comps at each gyms respective Facebook page.

  • CrossFit SPEED for Hell’s Playground July 8th
  • CrossFit Toowoomba for a local fundraising comp June 17th
